Robert and Callie Burton

Robert and Callie Burton lived at 308 E. High Avenue with their four children. The Burtons were entrepreneurs and leaders in Redlands’s Black community. Robert was a member of the Prince Hall masonic lodge in San Bernardino and served on the Second Baptist Church’s Board of Trustee from 1927 until his death in 1970. In addition to his work at Harris Company department store, the Burton’s also operated a grocery store out of their home. Burton’s Grocery Store became an important neighborhood business, becoming a refuge for families in need and, as Clarence Butler remembered, the place where children purchased sweets. By the late 1940s, Robert’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to become the first Black realtor in Redlands and the developer of the Lugonia Terrace neighborhood.
